Abhirami is a beautiful actress who has played several female lead roles of Malayalam,Tamil,Telugu and Kannada films during the period 1999 to 2004.She took a long break from films for ten years during which she had higher studies at USA and was working there after her studies in an MNC.She came back in 2014 and is again acting in films.
Abhirami hails from Thiruvananthapuram and her parents are Gopi Kumar and Pushpa.She studied at Christ Nagar English High School, and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.For Pre- degree course she studied at Mar Ivanios College,Trivandrum.She graduated in Psychology and Communication from College of Wooster,Ohio,USA.Her parents also migrated to USA and are Yoga instructors there.After graduation Abhirami was working there in a Multi National Company as Marketing director.
Her debut film was ‘Kathapurushan‘ directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan as a child artist.While studying at college in Trivandrum, she anchored a TV program, ‘Top Ten’ for Asianet Channel which became very popular and she got noticed by film makers.She got offers from films and TV serials from then on.She acted in the serial‘Akshayapathram’ of Sreekumaran Thambi during that period.She appeared in a small role of the Malayalam film ‘Pathram’ in 1999.
She acted as heroine of the Malayalam film ‘Njangal Santhushtaranu’ directed by Rajasenan in which Jayaram was the hero.Her character was ‘Geethu’ as the young wife of an I.P.S.Officer Sanjeevan (Jayaram).Because of her ego and immature character Geethu causes several problems in the husband’s family and to her husband.Ultimately she realizes her mistakes and the couple together with the family members starts a new happy life.Narendra Prasad,Janardhanan,Oduvil Unnikrishnan etc were the other important stars in that film.
In the year 2000 she acted the female lead of the Malayalam film ‘Millennium Stars’directed by Jayaraj.Jayaram,Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon were the leads.Kalabhavan Mani,Devan,Harisree Asokan,Jagathy,Manorama etc also acted in it.
In the same year she acted along with Balachandra Menon and Geetha in the film ‘Melevryathe Malakhakkuttikal’ directed by Thulasidas.
In the year 2001 she acted in the Malayalam film ‘Meghasandesam‘ in which she acted along with Samyuktha Varma and Suresh Gopi.The film was directed by Rajasenan.
After acting in the film Meghasandesam Abhirami shifted to Tamil,Telugu and Kannada Films and never acted in any more Malayalam films till 2004 after which she went to USA.
In 2001 she acted as the heroine of the Tamil film ‘Vaanavil’ opposite Arjun.Two friends loving the same girl and one of them due to his envy behaves villainous was the theme of that film.
Sarath Kumar and Abhirami were the main leads of the Tamil film ‘Dosth‘ in which Prakash Raj,Raghuvaran,Vadivelu,Crazy Mohan etc also acted.
In the year 2002 Sarath Kumar,Suresh Gopi,Devayani and Abhirami were the main leads of the Tamil film ‘Samasthanam’.It was the story of two close friends ‘Thiru’ (Sarath Kumar) and ‘Surya’ (Suresh Gopi).
In the Tamil comedy film ‘Middle Class Madhavan‘ Prabhu and Abhirami played the main roles.
In 2003 Abhirami and Darshan acted in the main roles of the Kannada film ‘Laali Haadu’ which was a critically acclaimed film.
In 2004 she was the heroine of Kamala Hassan film ‘Virumandi’ which was written,produced and directed by Kamal Hassan.He acted in the male lead role also.The film was a commercial success at the box Office.Napoleon and Rohini also acted in important roles of this film.
Abhirami returned to the silver screen after a long gap of ten years by acting in the Malayalam film ‘Apothecary‘ in 2014.In 2015 she acted along with Jyothika and Rahman in the Tamil film ’36 Vayadhinile’ which was a commercial success.The film was the remake of the Malayalam film ‘How Old are You’.
She is at present anchoring a program on a Malayalam TV Channel and acting in films also.She married ‘Rahul Pavanan’ the grandson of the famous Malayalam writer ‘Pavanan‘.
